Hi - just trying to stimulate a little activity on the sidecar forum.
I've got a chinese people's liberation army sidecar rig - it's called in chang-jiang 750
the chinese were pals with the russians who as you know 'obtained' the drawings for bmw's opposed twin in the 30's and shared with their red counterparts in China (we wont get into HOW - that seems to get Dniepr and Urinal owners all wound up - needless to say , they look very similiar -oddly enough there are engine and body parts that truly can be used internally on the CJ - says something doesnt it? i've got a pair of these one is bone stock - a side valve - sort of like driving an air compressor - and another which uses an R100 mill bolted to the chinese gearbox and final drive.
i'm just on the verge of doing another modification to the modified bike by installing a bmw 5speed gearbox into it with bmw final drive\drive shaft and rear wheel to have a 100% bmw powertrain.
the chinese gearbox is robust , very agricultural - no speed shifting this thing even without being tied to the chair . it's a 'high speed' 4 speed gearbox with reverse - which I have to say is the one (only) thing i am sorry about losing - it's incredibly convenient to have - you can be parked just about anywhere - the dog, wife, kid etc all on board and manouevre out of spaces so easily - changing up to a bmw power train will give me nothing but plusses - but the loss of reverse saddens me.
there were at one time people modifying the bmw gearbox to ADD reverse to it - this could be something i read on the internet - does anyone here have more info on that ? does anyone here use an alternate device for powered reverse ? currently teaching the child how push - but what to do when she's not there ?
cheers
