for those hoping to bolt a chair on a std solo frame and drive away, it may come as a shock that the front wheel wants to caster 180'o backwards. best practice is a modified front end with sidecar (car) castor around a 1/2". many have got by with a steering damper, most older brit bikes and some Japanese (early TX650 Yamaha) had friction dampers. I used even on race bikes a steering damper from a 1974 VW Wagon. getting hard to find these days, the local dealer no longer seem able to order them: California import parts Ltd based in BC supplied one recently within 4-5 days. cost $44 plus tax and shipping. website is www.cip1.com phone 1-800-313-3811.

    part number VWC-211-425-021-A

The VW dampers are also available from Rock Auto, (American parts source but Cdn friendly with reasonable shipping rates and very good pricing) and I've also seen them on Amazon dot C A.

I'm running two motorcycle dampers, one on each side of the triple tree on my Moto Guzzi Convert rig but have thought about replacing them with a VW unit.

    Good advice Paul..

Our rig didn't have much  of that at first but i adjusted the side car wheel ahead of the bikes rear about 10" it does ocilate  much more. Putting the wheel forward  did cure the pull to the curb side though :-)

My first bike at 16 years was a BSA flat head with a chair. 10" was almost standard at that time and has stuck with me through the years even on most of the race rigs I have built.

In the 50's UK working families very rarely owned cars: bicycles, bus, train, walk and motorcycle. Women enters the scene, fine with a dual seat, followed by a child add a sidecar. This changed drastically when the MINI arrived, cost around the same as a bigger bike and new sidecar. The standard lower cost chair was a single seat with a hinged top half, even BSA made one. More than one child get a Busmar double adult with a full door.  top left hinged top, passenger cannot get in or out without outside help. lowerright full (home made) double adult with full door, side window and sun roof. lower left my race triton with a hauler platform to carry my 175 Fomula Ducati , (uncoupled at the track) same set up with a trade box on the chair I rode up to Canada with my belongings. Raced the floowing spring at the Daytona FIM, finished 10th. Top right Chris Vincent on the 500 BSA at Governer's Bridge on the way to a win.

When i had porkchop install my Velorex 700 on my V Strom he told me he used a shock from a Jeep as a steering damper. I get no head shake at any speed so if you cant get VW try older jeep . Let me know if you want pictures if its of interest .

    Hello,

If you could post a pic i'd appreciate it. How old of a jeep? Not many old VWs around either.

I asked Monroe for a list of dampers (several hundred) most current units were monsters for large trucks but there were other with O.D.'s of 1 1/2" but when I ordered one from the dimensional list it arrived with a 2 1/2" OD, so I went back to VW which I knew.

There is a difference I am told between "self centering" type's, and simply dampening which I use. It is quite probable that other manufacturers make dampers for smaller vehicles.

I just purchased and used the VW damper. It worked great. No more front end wobble.

I'm pretty sure I saw the VW damper at the Ural Dealer (old Vintage Cranks) a few years ago.
