Some have used the CB650 cam it is a straight exchange fit yet you need the tach drive from the CB650 too I believe. Usually when done it will give you more lift and duration like when your exchanging say a CB750DOHC cam setup with the CB900DOHC exchange.

Beyond that likely outfits like Megacam or other cam specialists may offer special grinds of cams for the motor. Once you get into those items though, then the valves and springs become part of the equation too and it’s not cheap.

I used a Megacycle stage 1 cam in my vintage racer. Needed stiffer valve springs, also from megacycle, with stock valves. Carbs needed bigger main jets and fiddling with needle position to get the bike to idle. I think I had to drop the needles one position, can't remember the jet sizes though. It was a long time ago... If you do a 650 cam please post your results - I hadn't heard that worked but it makes sense. I adapted the ignition from a CB650 to my racer as well. You need to mount the cb650 timing plate onto a modified CB550 plate - not too difficult. Need the CB650 timing cover as well which is stronger and looks better (at least to me) than the stamped metal points cover on the 550. Cheers!
