Andy Hall's Bikes (1967-1979) (9)

Created on: 20 Dec 2020
  • My big sister's boyfriend's Dad had one of these 50cc Raleigh RM1's that stopped working. He gave it to me to tinker with at age 13 or so, and it was in effect my first motorcycle.
  • Here I am in Crawley, UK (1967?) at age 14 on a 350 Matchless. Met some other kids in the woods, and I swapped it for my D3 Bantam. Had to always bump-start it.
  • In the UK in 1969 I had a very used one of these - a Norman B3 Sports with the fabulous Villiers 250cc 2T twin. Not quite as nice as this one though. I had a wooden racing seat and sawn-off mufflers.
  • This is my late-50's BSA 650cc A10 Gold Flash that I had as a young man around 1972 in Sussex, UK. I rode it around Brighton when I was a student at Brighton Poly. Took it to Portugal on holidays.
  • Somewhere in France, 1975, with girlfriend Martine on way to Portugal. Nearly lost top of my finger in the magneto HT hole, trying to find a spark on a dead bike. Commutator ring was broken.
  • Another photo of my Ariel VH 500, this time nr. Cognac, France where some friends and I were picking grapes (les vendanges).
  • My Ariel 500cc VH in Shippon (nr. Oxford) around 1977(?). Had a job as Super X-Ray Spectrometer Repair Man at Telsec after graduating from Brighton Poly. Also had a 350cc NH prior to this one.
  • 1979 - Dingle Cottage, Boars Hill, Oxon, UK where I rented a room for a while. This is my 1977 Triumph T140V Silver Jubilee Bonneville - my first new bike. Took out a loan from the bank to buy it.
  • 1979 - My Silver Jubilee Bonnie again. Flogged it for a song in London prior to emigrating here to Canada in 1980. Did ton+20 on M40 downhill from High Wycombe.
